| Sam's Story Canine Lymphoma |
| On Sam's first visit to the Oncologist he had a CBC, Chest x-ray and Abdominal Ultrasound to see if the cancer had spread beyond the Lymph Nodes. Luckily it didn't and he was places in stage 3 of a 5 stage evaluation scale. Sam started on Chemotherapy Protocol that same day. Sam was started on a 19 week Protocol with the following: Vincristine Cytoxan Adriamycin on the first week he was also given Asparaginase (Elspar) and also given Prednisone that was given once a day for the first 4 weeks The day after his first treatment all of the Nodes went down & besides being tired for two or three days after he had no reactions. Sam Completed the 19 weeks and remained in remission for 17 months. When we felt his lumps getting large again we went back to the Vet. & he was started on the same Protocol as before. Later that day after the first treatment Sam had a Very Bad reaction to Asparaginase (Elspar) and had to be rushed to our local Vet. He was Vomiting, Began Scratching and he Belly turned Bright Red and then He Swelled up everywhere. He was given Benadryal and after a couple of days he was OK. He went into remission but this time it only lasted 3 months. After this time we switched to a "Rescue Protocol" called "CCNU" which would maintain him but would not put him into remission. We went for treatment once a week for months until Sam stopped responding to it. He was switched to "MOPP" which was also given once a week. This would reduce his Nodes but they would return fairly quick. The Doctor now told us the only other option was a 4 hour treatment with Cosmegen & Cytosar which was given in am IV drip. We agreed to try it. This gave Sam very bad Diahrea for an entire week. After that we decided to stop treatment. Sam Lived another 4 weeks acting fairly good until his last few days. Sam Lived 28 months from the time he was diagnosed with Canine Lymphoma. |
